Planning to whisk yourself away from the hustle and bustle of the city? Are you thinking of carefully preparing a picnic basket to take with you? In that case, you must take a look at our list of top 7 picnic food items, for that much-awaited weekend getaway.

  1. Sandwiches: Be it plain cheese,coleslaw, cucumber and tomatoes or the classic green chutney combination,sandwiches are an essential part of the picnic basket. Wrap them up in cellophane to keep them fresh and delicious.

  2. Pasta Salad: This dish is both easy to make and great to eat. Pop in some juicy black olives, crisp capsicums and a sprinkling of pepper for great taste.

  3. Sweet Corn: Boil or steam some corn, add in a pinch of salt, sugar, lime juice and pepper. What you have before you is a bowl of bliss, especially when had outdoors!

  4. Cookies: For every person with a sweet tooth, cookies are a delight. Whether it is chocolate chip cookies or oatmeal raisin cookies, carrying a bag of them for a picnic is bound to make you everybody’s favourite!

  5. Samosas: Hot samosas packed carefully in a warm casserole are an ideal picnic snack! Serve them on paper plates with a dash of sweet chutney at the side.

  6.  Khakras: These wafer-thin snacks are both easy to carry and liked by almost everyone. If you’re willing to experiment, adding a dash of red chilli powder to the khakra will help enhance the taste.

  7. Lemonade: To wash down all of that food, carrying a pitcher of lemonade to a picnic is a must! Make sure to add in lots of ice and perhaps some mint leaves. Tip: This drink is always best had with a good book.
