HEALTHY FOODS POST HOLIDAY BINGE

By Sanjana Subramaniam for The Planet Food

t’s now officially time to stow away those sparkly evening gowns and that perfect pair of shoes.

The festive season has come and gone. 2016 has arrived!

The holidays call for lots of partying and get-togethers. The festive season puts everyone in a good spirit and when we feel happy, we all tend to eat more than we think we can. This means taking third helpings of your mother’s homemade biryani or your grandmother’s delicious kheer. But hey, we’re only humans! How can you resist a large piece of rich plum cake during Christmas? You can’t even say no to a three-course meal on New Year’s Eve,can you?! So, if you can’t get into your favourite pair of jeans anymore, fret not. We’ll tell you how you can get back into shape by eating right.

For starters, substitute your daily cup of tea or coffee, with a healthy cup of green tea. Known for its medicinal values, green tea is also a great way to shed off those extra pounds. You can stop feeling guilty about all that holiday beginning with a steaming cup of this concoction.

Remember not to skip breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. However, instead of your usual servings of aloo parathas, help yourself to a bowl of cereal or muesli. You can even add in some sliced strawberries or bananas to give the average cereal bowl a nice tropical twist.

Try to have a light dinner.  Opt for a bowl of soup and some salad. You can dress your salad up differently each time to make sure you don’t miss out on flavours.  If you’re still hungry, you could have a multi-grain bread sandwich. This way, you eat the right kind of food without compromising on taste. Moreover, you must keep yourself hydrated at all times. Something as simple as a bottle of water actually does wonders for the system.

After those delicious puddings and tarts and elaborately prepared meals, a healthy food regime such as this one, will be a welcome change for your body. What’s more, you will feel refreshed and energetic. So, let the New Year witness a new You.
